The shoulder girdle is a complex system of joints, muscles, and connective tissue. This complicated structure is designed for mobility which makes it an integral part of many of our movements. We use our shoulders for a variety of functions like lifting, pulling, pushing, and smaller movements that occur in the arms and hands. It should go without saying that the health and condition of our shoulders is important and therefore should not be overlooked, especially in the yoga practice where we spend so much time weight-bearing with the upper body.
Many people carry stress and tension in the shoulders. This may be due to a job that requires a repetitive arm motion that puts strain on the shoulders or sitting at a desk all day. Whether students are suffering because of overuse, underuse, poor postural habits, repetitive motion, or something
in-between, yoga has the potential to remedy the situation.
In this advanced teacher training module we will study the anatomy of the physical structures, the functionality of the shoulder girdle, common issues and dysfunctions of the shoulder girdle complex and the application of yoga to help create balance and health in this area of the body.
